Formal Portraits: A Sampling

TRINITY COLLEGE
Hartford, CT

Below is an excerpt from the speech given by the president of Trinity College, Mr. Evan Dobell, given on the occasion of the formal unveiling of the three oil portraits featured below. The unveiling took place at Trinity College, Hartford, CT, on May 19, 2000

"Mr. Alcorn elected to paint the three portraits as a set. As you will see, each subject is portrayed before the same recurring backdrop motif, yet each has assumed a slightly different pose. These paintings represent a contemporary style of portraiture, one that mixes the formality of the conventionally posed portrait with an informal attitude and approachability that effectively captures the humanity and sensibility of these remarkable individuals. They appear not in academic regalia, but in casual dress, holding a book in their hands that reflects the remarkable dedication each has to his or her discipline. Fittingly, they are pictured here not so much posing for the artist, but engaging with the viewer in a thoughtful dialog, as they have with so many students and colleagues over the years. "
